C300 controller reference for installed Experion PKS systems. Confirm generation, release, IOTA and redundant partner.
View product ↗AI can recognize a developing abnormal situation, but every recommendation still begins with a trustworthy measurement and a deterministic control path.
Honeywell introduced Experion Cognition on June 9, 2026 as an AI-enabled extension to the Experion PKS environment. A live proof of concept at Borouge International’s Ruwais facility in Abu Dhabi demonstrated technology intended to identify developing abnormal situations, recommend operator actions and automate selected decisions within an approved operating framework. Honeywell reports that, across multiple pilots, the platform predicted some alarm incidents an average of five to ten minutes in advance, with commercial availability planned for the third quarter of 2026.
The intelligence layer changes; the requirement for sound control hardware does not.
Experion Cognition is positioned above plant measurement and deterministic control. It can correlate process variables, alarms and operating context, but it does not measure pressure directly and it does not energize a valve solenoid. Those jobs still belong to field instruments, I/O, controllers and final control elements.
If any link produces inaccurate, delayed or unavailable data, the quality of the AI analysis falls with it. Cognition adds an analytical layer; it does not remove a hardware layer.
The Honeywell C300 controller runs the Control Execution Environment (CEE), executing control modules and sequence strategies on a defined cycle. Experion Cognition may identify that a distillation-column pressure trend is approaching an abnormal state, but the C300 still reads the current process values, solves the control strategy, applies limits and permissives, sends the output command and maintains basic control if an upper-level application becomes unavailable.
The exact controller generation matters. Honeywell documentation distinguishes 8C-PCNT03 and the newer 8C-PCNT05. PCNT05 supports later Experion releases, but Honeywell notes that PCNT05 and PCNT03 are not an interoperable redundant pair. A shared family name is therefore not evidence of direct interchangeability.
C300 can only act on information it receives. In many Experion PKS installations, Series C I/O is the point where real electrical signals become engineering data. Open any card below for the purchasing and engineering context.
A drifting transmitter, unstable input channel or incorrect valve-position feedback can produce a technically valid data stream that does not represent the real process. The AI may analyze the supplied values correctly and still reach a poor conclusion because the source data is wrong. For that reason, channel health, calibration history, bad-value frequency and loop verification are part of AI data governance.
A useful readiness review is not a generic “hardware healthy” checkbox. It should leave engineering and procurement with a traceable configuration record.
These live product pages are sourcing references, not declarations of interchangeability. Match every part number, revision, IOTA, connector and installed release before ordering.

View product ↗No. Cognition adds analysis and operator-support capabilities above the deterministic control layer. C300 remains responsible for executing the configured control strategies.
Do not assume so. Honeywell documentation states that 8C-PCNT05 and 8C-PCNT03 do not form an interoperable redundant pair. Check the full controller identity, Experion release and current manufacturer documentation.
No. Channel configuration still has to match the signal range, wiring method, loop power, HART requirement, load, hazardous-area interface, termination and control or safety classification.
No. Predictive analytics can add context, but fast protection functions remain assigned to dedicated, deterministic and correctly engineered protection channels.
