Engineering & Procurement Guide
Woodward Automation Parts: A Practical easYgen Selection and Replacement Guide
Technical identification, compatibility checks and sourcing considerations for Woodward easYgen generator controllers.
When a generator controller fails, purchasing a device with a similar front panel is not enough. The replacement must match the installed power supply, voltage-measurement circuit, engine interface, breaker logic, I/O arrangement and configuration requirements.
This is particularly important when sourcing Woodward automation parts for generators that have been operating for many years. Maintenance teams may be working with incomplete manuals, discontinued part numbers or controllers whose original parameter files are no longer available.
We support international customers searching for new, surplus, obsolete and hard-to-find industrial automation components. This guide examines the Woodward easYgen family, with a technical focus on the Woodward 8440-1800 EASYGEN-320-50B/X Genset Controller.
It is written for maintenance engineers, system integrators, equipment managers and procurement departments that need more than a price: they need an accurate product identity and a defensible replacement decision.
What Is a Woodward Control System?
Woodward produces control and protection equipment for engines, turbines, generator sets and other power-management applications. Depending on the system architecture, a Woodward control system may perform:
- Diesel or gas-engine start and stop sequencing
- Speed and load control
- Generator voltage and frequency monitoring
- Generator and engine protection
- Generator circuit-breaker control
- Synchronizing and load sharing
- Alarm and event recording
- Communication with engine ECUs
- Operating-hour and maintenance monitoring
- Remote monitoring and diagnostics
The Woodward product range includes generator controllers, Woodward governors, turbine control hardware, actuators, synchronizers and related control components.
However, “Woodward controller” is only a general description. A purchasing decision must be based on the complete Woodward part number, model code, hardware revision and installed application.

What Does the EASYGEN-320-50B/X Control?
The 8440-1800 manages the operating sequence of a diesel generator set. After receiving a start command, the controller can execute the configured pre-glow, fuel and cranking sequence. It then monitors engine and generator conditions during operation.
The monitored and configurable functions include:
- Generator voltage
- Generator frequency
- Engine speed
- Battery voltage
- Charge-alternator condition
- Operating hours
- Service hours
- Number of starts
- Start failure
- Unintended engine stop
The protection functions include ANSI 27/59 for generator under/overvoltage, ANSI 81U/81O for under/overfrequency and ANSI 12 for engine overspeed.
The controller also provides an MPU input for engine-speed measurement, a D+ charge-alternator input/output and fixed or configurable discrete I/O.
Its relay outputs must be checked against the actual field loads. Woodward’s published general-purpose contact ratings include 2 A at 250 VAC and 2 A at 24 VDC. If a starter, fuel solenoid or breaker coil exceeds the permitted relay load, an appropriately rated interposing relay may be required.
CAN J1939 and Engine ECU Compatibility
The EASYGEN-320-50B/X can communicate through CAN J1939 with selected electronic engine-control units. This allows the controller to display ECU information and J1939 diagnostic messages, including DM1 and DM2 SPN-FMI data.
The presence of a CAN connection does not prove that every J1939 engine ECU will communicate correctly. Before ordering a Woodward replacement, the engineering team should identify:
- Engine manufacturer and model
- ECU manufacturer and model
- Existing J1939 source address
- Required baud rate
- Supported engine message set
- Existing CAN termination arrangement
- Parameters currently obtained from the ECU
- Functions dependent on ECU communication
If the controller is used only with an MPU speed signal and hardwired alarms, the replacement review may be different from a system that depends heavily on J1939 data.
Comparing Related Woodward easYgen Models
Product names in the same series can represent different control applications.
Single-generator control with GCB operation
Adds mains monitoring, MCB control, AMF and transfer operation
Compact generator start/stop controller
Generator controller with additional industrial connectivity
Advanced start/stop controller with Ethernet and SD-card capability
Generator set control and protection unit
The EASYGEN-350-50B/X should not automatically be treated as a drop-in replacement for the EASYGEN-320-50B/X. The 350 model introduces mains-voltage measurement, mains circuit-breaker control and automatic transfer functions.
Similarly, newer easYgen controllers may have different panel cutouts, terminal arrangements, displays, I/O counts, protocols and software tools. A migration to a newer series may require panel modification, rewiring, parameter conversion and complete functional commissioning.
How to Identify the Correct Woodward Part Number
A common sourcing problem is an enquiry containing only “Woodward easYgen-320.” That description does not provide enough information for a controlled purchasing decision.
Send clear photographs of:
- Complete product nameplate
- Part number
- Full model description
- Serial number
- Hardware revision
- Manufacturing or date code
- Front panel
- Rear terminals and connectors
- Existing approval labels
- Existing wiring diagram or terminal schedule
For this product, the enquiry should identify both:
- Woodward part number: 8440-1800
- Model: EASYGEN-320-50B/X
Do not rely exclusively on a handwritten equipment list. Numbers may have been shortened, copied incorrectly or carried over from an earlier controller revision.
What Engineers Should Check Before Replacement
Mechanical compatibility
Compare the external dimensions, panel cutout, mounting system, connector positions and cabinet depth. The published dimensions for the 8440-1800 are 158 × 158 × 40 mm, with a panel cutout of approximately 138 × 138 mm.
Functional compatibility
Determine whether the application requires only generator circuit-breaker control or also requires a mains circuit breaker, AMF operation or automatic transfer switching.
Electrical compatibility
Verify:
- 12 or 24 VDC control supply
- Generator voltage and frequency
- Phase and wiring arrangement
- Terminal assignments
- Breaker coil voltage
- Relay contact loads
- Discrete input voltage
- MPU signal type
- D+ connection
- Grounding and shielding
Configuration compatibility
Confirm whether a backup of the existing parameters is available. The controller settings may include:
- Generator rated voltage
- Rated frequency
- Nominal engine speed
- Number of flywheel teeth
- Pre-glow time
- Crank duration
- Cool-down time
- Voltage and frequency limits
- Alarm delays and alarm classes
- Input assignments
- Relay assignments
- J1939 settings
- Maintenance intervals
- Firmware and software revision
The Woodward documentation refers to configuration using ToolKit with DPC cable 5417-1251, or a legacy RS-232 workflow using cable 5417-557. Software, cable and controller revision must be checked before attempting to retrieve or restore parameters.
What Procurement Teams Should Include in an RFQ
A complete RFQ for Woodward spare parts should contain:
- Manufacturer and complete part number
- Full model description
- Required quantity
- Clear nameplate photographs
- Preferred condition: new, unused surplus or refurbished
- Acceptable revision or manufacturing date
- Destination country and postal code
- Required Incoterm
- Target delivery date
- Inspection, certificate or traceability requirements
- Required warranty terms
- Whether configuration or commissioning support is needed
Stock status, physical condition, price, warranty and delivery time must be confirmed in the written quotation. A website listing should not be interpreted as guaranteed availability.
Sourcing Obsolete Woodward Parts
Older Woodward controllers may remain in service long after a product family has changed. In these cases, buyers may have to consider unused-surplus units, inspected legacy parts, refurbished equipment or an engineered migration.
Before accepting a proposed substitute for obsolete Woodward parts, compare:
- Original and proposed part numbers
- Hardware revisions
- Input and output quantities
- Terminal assignments
- Measurement ranges
- Communication protocols
- Breaker-control logic
- Panel dimensions
- Parameter-file compatibility
- Required configuration software
- Current manufacturer documentation
- External accessories and wiring requirements
A historical cross-reference is useful for identifying a possible Woodward replacement, but it does not prove that the device can be installed without engineering changes.
