+86-18020776786Overcurrent and Earth-Fault Relay · Feeder Protection
ABB SPAJ 144C-AA is a combined overcurrent and earth-fault protection relay for distribution feeders. Its three phase-overcurrent stages and two non-directional earth-fault stages are complemented by phase-discontinuity and circuit-breaker-failure protection. The AA version identifies 50 Hz operation and an 80–265 V AC/DC auxiliary-supply range; it must not be confused with the lower-voltage CA version.
The relay accepts 1 A or 5 A current-transformer secondary inputs through their designated terminals. The low-set phase and earth-fault stages provide definite-time or inverse-time operation, while the higher stages use definite-time characteristics. Engineering selection must preserve CT ratios, terminal assignments, coordination curves and the trip-contact duty rather than treating all current and contact ratings as interchangeable.
For an MRO replacement or integrator spare package, retain the existing protection settings, relay configuration and unit identification before commissioning. Specify whether the RTXP 18 test adapter and fibre-optic SPA-bus accessories are included, since these are separate ordering considerations. Acceptance should include a controlled secondary-injection test with the trip circuit managed under the site safety procedure, followed by documented verification of the applicable protection stages.

Preserve feeder protection settings, CT ratios, trip logic and the approved coordination study before replacement.
ABB identifies AA as 50 Hz with an 80–265 V AC/DC auxiliary-supply range. CA is the 50 Hz, 18–80 V DC alternative; DA and FA are 60 Hz variants. Check the delivered suffix and power-module label against the station auxiliary supply before connection.
The guide assigns 1 A inputs to terminals 1–3, 4–6, 7–9 and 25–27, and 5 A inputs to 1–2, 4–5, 7–8 and 25–26. Confirm the CT secondary rating and approved drawing. Never open an energized CT secondary while changing the relay or its wiring.
No. The low-set I> stage supports definite-time or inverse-time operation; I>> and I>>> have definite-time characteristics. Use the coordinated stage-specific settings and applicable curve set when defining secondary-injection acceptance points.
DC interruption duty is lower than continuous carrying duty. At L/R ≤40 ms, ABB specifies the trip contacts for breaking 1 A at 220 V DC, 3 A at 110 V DC or 5 A at 48 V DC. Compare the actual coil duty and suppression arrangement with the relevant limit.
The integrated circuit-breaker failure function provides a 0.1–1.0 s delay after the primary trip signal. Verify the approved backup-breaker logic and timing independently of the ordinary feeder overcurrent-stage operating time.
Its documented interface uses the fibre-optic SPA serial bus, with ASCII data at 4800 or 9600 baud through a SPA-ZC bus connection module. Specify the compatible optical media and adapter; an Ethernet connection is not established by the serial port alone.
ABB lists the RS 611 040 ordering family without the test adapter and RS 611 240 with RTXP 18. Confirm the complete order number and included accessories from the offered unit and quotation; the short SPAJ 144C-AA designation alone does not establish that the adapter is supplied.
IRF indicates that self-supervision has detected an internal relay fault. Record the displayed fault code, self-supervision contact state and serial diagnostic information, and follow the applicable relay manual. Do not classify an internal diagnostic fault as a feeder overcurrent event merely because both involve relay indications.
Send the model, complete part number, quantity, destination and nameplate photo. We will verify identification details before confirming availability and lead time.
