ABB SAFT188IOC, also marked SAFT 188 IOC, is the Input/Output Connection Card described in the SAMI STAR drive user manual. It interfaces the inverter control electronics with external devices, the CP1 control panel and the associated terminal-block arrangement. Its documented role is drive I/O connection and communication, not a general-purpose Ethernet or Modbus interface.
The card connects to SAFT 174 TBC through X1 and to the CP1 panel through X5. Channel 1 is reserved for IOC communication, with startup synchronization to the drive transmissions. The manual documents 4800 and 9600 baud message operation, S2/S3 tachometer-voltage selection and S6 current/voltage input selection; these settings must be checked against the actual field connections.
For maintenance or MRO sourcing, record the card marking, cable and optical routing, installed option cards, selector positions and saved drive configuration before removal. Confirm the separate terminal-block and control-panel connections instead of ordering from a similar board name. Qualified personnel should follow the drive isolation and commissioning procedures, including verification of the configured output transmission table before returning equipment to service.

|---|---|
| Model / designation | SAFT188IOC / SAFT 188 IOC |
| Module type / system | Input/Output Connection Card · SAMI STAR |
| Documented supply feeds | 24 V DC and +14 V DC; on-board 5 V DC control supply |
| Terminal-block connection | X1 to SAFT 174 TBC |
| Operator-panel connection | X5 to CP1 control panel |
| Optional analog I/O connection | X4; match the installed option-card arrangement |
| Drive communication channel | Channel 1 reserved for IOC communication |
| Message baud rates | 4800 / 9600 baud; startup synchronization to drive transmissions |
| Message transfer time | Approximately 20 ms at 4800 baud / 10 ms at 9600 baud |
| Initialized message buffer | 10 messages; contents depend on option-card configuration |
| Tachometer voltage selectors | S2 / S3: b–a = 13 V; a–c = 24 V |
| Analog-input selector | S6: b–a = current input; a–c = voltage input |
| Output transmission configuration | Recurring output transmission table: TEE 114–TEE 129 |
Preserve the IOC selector positions, optical connections and recurring output transmission table. Match the installed SAMI STAR configuration before returning the drive to service.
The SAMI STAR manual associates this display with the IOC receiving no drive messages during startup. Record the fault and inspect the Channel 1 communication path under the approved isolation procedure; the indication alone does not prove that the IOC board needs replacement.
X1 connects the IOC to the SAFT 174 TBC terminal block, whereas X5 is the CP1 control-panel connection for local operation and monitoring. Identify the connector markings and retain the original cable routing before disconnecting the assembly.
The documented S6 positions are b–a for current input and a–c for voltage input. Record the existing position and the field signal type together. A replacement that retains the wrong selector position can misinterpret the signal even when its connector fits.
For S2 and S3, the manual labels b–a as 13 V and a–c as 24 V. Compare both selector positions with the installed tachometer arrangement; these settings are not the general supply-voltage rating of the card. Changes require the applicable drive commissioning procedure.
No. The cited approximately 10 ms at 9600 baud, or 20 ms at 4800 baud, is a per-message transfer time. The IOC initializes a ten-message buffer, and option cards affect its contents. Do not substitute the per-message figure for an end-to-end control-loop response guarantee.
No. The manual identifies the 5 V reference as factory set and controlled by R400. Incoming inspection should document board identity and condition; energized measurements or adjustments require qualified personnel and the approved service procedure, not an improvised acceptance test.
The recurring output transmission table TEE 114 through TEE 129 defines the documented output transmissions. Back up the drive configuration and verify its mapping against connected equipment before recommissioning. Physical board replacement does not by itself establish correct output assignments.
Request photographs showing the SAFT188IOC marking, X1/X5 identification, selector positions and optical connections. The associated SAFT 174 TBC is a separate terminal-block component, not an alternate name for the IOC. The purchase description should state which assembly is actually required.
Send the model, complete part number, quantity, destination and nameplate photo. We will verify identification details before confirming availability and lead time.
